Dawn

Dawn (right) is one of the most treasured "instructors" on the equine staff, acquired though a generous donation from Patricia Meyers.  Dawn is a 25-year-old palomino Arab/quarter mix who has taught lessons to adults and children for most of her life.  She's an expert in both English and western disciplines and will talk your ear off if you let her.

Buddy was born in approximately 1982. He was donated to the therapeutic riding center on May 18, 2001 by Catherine Knight of Norco. Buddy is a favorite of many beginning riders. Although is not very social in the barn, he is very cautious and protective of our disabled riders. He has even been known to go out of his way to not step on their feet when he is being led by students but when he has an opportunity, he will kick dirt in the shoes of our volunteer horse handlers.

Bodie was donated to Queen of Hearts Therapeutic Riding Center in 2003 by Carol from Wholesale Feeds in Norco. He is very familiar with the trails and river bed of Norco but it had gotten too difficult for him to go up and down the hills. He therefore has "retired" to Queen of Hearts and is giving pleasure to the young and old alike. Although he will work with the English riders, his preference is Western. Bodie also likes to play jokes on the volunteers so please be careful when you turn your back on him or when you bend over, he may give you a playful push with his nose.

Carousel, registered "Salt Whistle" is a 15.3 blue roan mare and was foaled in approximately 1983. Carousel was abandoned at a closing stable so her exact breeding is unknown. She was lovingly cared for by Ms. Susan E. Masero of Rancho Palos Verdes prior to her donation to Queen of Hearts on May 27, 2003. This very loving horse was trained for dressage and can work with our more experienced riders.

Lady - Arrived at Queen of Hearts Therapeutic Riding Center on January 17, 2004, donated by Janet Cordova of Norco. This 14.2h bay Arabian mare was born on January 23, 1982 in Sunnymead, California. She has a very sweet disposition and her riding disciplines include both English and Western as she has experience in roping and trail riding. She is very calm and collected during shows and seems to favor the showmanship class where she seems to enjoy being shown off.

Candy is a 14.3h AQHA registered quarterhorse born on April 30, 2002 in Purcell, Oklahoma. This Palamino mare was registered as "Boot Shine" but she is so sweet that everyone just calls her Candy. She was donated on August 22, 2004 by Felix and Michelle Castruita of Norco, CA after some early training as a reigning horse. She loves visitors and enjoys a loving pet on the nose.

Our Precious 'Retirees'

John WayneJohn Wayne (JW, left) is a 22-year-old bay quarter horse who has now retired from both the race track and Queen of Hearts Ranch.  He arrived at Queen of Hearts in 1999 and is now owned by Kirsty Scott.  JW is one of the gentlest horses in our program, and although some may call him "pokey," his concern was always for the safety and welfare of his riders.  He slows down for those who are timid and will take care to gain their confidence.

SequoiaSequoia (right) is a spunky 10-year old sorrel quarter horse who loves to run - the exact opposite of John Wayne.  She came to Queen of Hearts in 1997, but because of an old injury, she has been retired.
